Are Massage Guns Worth Using? Getting Past The Hype

Are Massage Guns Worth Using? Getting Past The Hype

Massage Therapy

Do you notice you seem to get stiff and sore after a workout and want to recover and avoid nagging problems? Are you looking for an easy and effective way to help loosen up before working out? At Balance in Motion, we use the most advanced forms of treatment, including massage guns, to help your body function at its peak potential!

Percussive massage treatments (aka massage guns) are effective adjuncts to manual therapy techniques in treating soft tissue pain and injuries. These devices help to break down adhesions in the muscles and fascia and improve circulation to prepare the body for exercise.

Adhesions are often due to repetitive strains, prolonged postures, and intense workouts. Over time these restrictions can lead to limited muscle flexibility, reduced joint range of motion, or limited nerve mobility that causes pain and dysfunctional movement patterns.

The most effective solution to these types of limitations is the hands of our Balance in Motion massage therapists, but massage guns can help maintain the improvements between sessions with your massage therapist.

At Balance in Motion, our massage therapists help everyone from professional athletes to recreational gym-goers to those with chronic pain. Call today to set up an appointment with one of our massage therapists to see if a massage gun treatment is right for you!

What is percussive massage therapy?

Massage guns (aka percussion massagers) use deep oscillation to improve circulation, increase mobility, and help to break down adhesions in the muscles and fascia throughout the body. Massage guns are devices that use mechanical, high-intensity, high-powered pulses to permeate deep into the muscles and “release” restrictions.

The vibrational waves help to facilitate muscle recovery, reduce muscle pain, and decrease lactic acid build-up in the muscles after a workout. In addition, these rapid, short-duration pulses help improve blood flow and lymph drainage to assist in the repair and healing process after an injury.

After exercise or an injury, healing and repair require the body to recover from physiological stressors to the musculoskeletal, nervous, and metabolic systems. Sports and training may cause exercise-induced muscle damage, leading to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). We may use various treatments to offset the adverse effects of exercise or recover from an injury.

Our massage therapists are highly skilled experts dedicated to your health and well-being. We use a hands-on approach to achieve the most effective results, but we often recommend stretches, foam rolling, or a massage gun in between sessions to maintain your improvements.

Whether you are looking to prepare your body before training or a tool to assist your recovery from exercise or injury, our massage therapists at Balance in Motion can help!

What to expect from your massage therapy sessions

At Balance in Motion, we are committed to improving health in the communities we serve through compassion, high-quality care, injury prevention, and wellness education. Our massage therapists help athletes, and non-athletes recover from injuries and keep their bodies healthy and functioning at their highest potential.

We will start with a brief history of your injuries, past and current, and a hands-on physical assessment to identify any restrictions or areas of sensitivity contributing to your injury and/or soreness. We also want to know about your training and work schedule to understand more about the demands placed on your body in a typical day, week, and month.

Understanding more about the limitations, restrictions, and areas of sensitivity affecting your pain helps us find a proactive solution. We will help you modify activities and make recommendations to give you the confidence and freedom to resume the things you have been avoiding and prepare your body to handle the challenges of your normal activity levels.

The initial aims of massage therapy are to alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and restore or improve tissue mobility. We will use targeted massage techniques, including a massage gun, mobility work,  and stretches, to maintain pain relief and improved mobility between our massage sessions.

At Balance in Motion, our massage therapists are dedicated to your health and well-being. We will continue to monitor your recovery using the necessary therapies to achieve the best possible outcomes.
