Does a Lumbar Disc Bulge Mean Your Back Is Damaged?

Being told that you have a bulging or herniated disc in your lower back can sound frightening. Many people assume their spine is damaged, they should stop exercising, or surgery will be necessary.

However, an MRI does not always tell the full story.

Some people have lumbar disc bulges without experiencing any pain. Others may have significant symptoms even when their MRI findings appear relatively mild. This is why your symptoms, movement, strength, and daily limitations must be considered alongside the imaging results.

  • Lower-back pain
  • Pain traveling into the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot
  • Tingling or numbness in the leg
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Pain with prolonged sitting, bending, lifting, coughing, or sneezing

The important thing to remember is that a disc bulge does not automatically mean your back is permanently damaged.

A proper evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms are related to the disc, a nerve, muscle tension, joint stiffness, movement habits, or a combination of factors.
