Should You Rest When You Have a Lumbar Disc Problem?

One of the most common misconceptions about lumber disc injuries is that complete rest is the safest treatment.

While certain painful movements may need to be temporarily modified, prolonged bed rest can lead to increased stiffness, weakness, and fear of movement.

In many cases, safe and controlled movement can be an important part of recovery.

While certain painful movements may need to be temporarily modified, prolonged bed rest can lead to increased stiffness, weakness, and fear of movement.

In many cases, safe and controlled movement can be an important part of recovery.

The key is identifying:

  • Which movements increase your symptoms
  • Which positions reduce your pain
  • Whether leg symptoms move closer to or farther away from your lower back
  • Which activities can be continued safely

At Balance In Motion Physical Therapy, we evaluate how your symptoms respond to different movements and positions. Treatment may include mobility exercises, core and hip strengthening, hands-on therapy, postural training, nerve-mobility exercises, and education about sitting, sleeping, bending, and lifting.

The goal is not to push through severe pain. It is to gradually restore movement, strength, and confidence without unnecessarily avoiding activity.
